Dr. Ed Brenegar Presents Circle of Impact: Taking Personal Initiative To Ignite Change

Dr. Ed Brenegar, author, speaker, coach, and  Silicon Couloir supporter, invites you to activate your personal initiative.

At the November Chance Meeting, we will celebrate the publication of Ed's book, Circle of Impact: Taking Personal Initiative To Ignite Change, a book that details how personal leadership functions in organizations and communities. Ed will share some of the principles that help us to better practice leadership impact and will explain how anyone can develop the personal initiative needed to create real impact both in their own lives and within their organizations.

Running a successful business is full of challenges, especially during times of transition. But when your people are motivated, inspired, and determined to give their very best, you can achieve great things.

Books will be for sale at the event. A portion of every book sold will be donated to the support of Silicon Couloir.

Theme: An Entrepreneur's Journey with Mike Smerklo

Mike Smerklo, Silicon Couloir Trustee, a seasoned entrepreneur, and venture capitalist, will join us and share his lessons learned.

In Mike's own words...

My name is Michael Smerklo. I’m an entrepreneur and investor.  I am Co-Founder of a Venture Capital firm in Austin, Texas called Next Coast Ventures.  Prior to this, I bought a small technology services company, ServiceSource, and ran it for 12 years, taking it from a small startup to a public company with over 3,000 employees around the world. I was also one of the first employees at a pioneer cloud services company called Opsware (then Loudcloud), that also went public. Before becoming an entrepreneur, I had (and thoroughly hated) jobs in investment banking and public accounting.

My communications are focused on helping other entrepreneurs reach their goals by sharing what I have learned along the way. It is focused on the non-obvious things I learned along my journey. I call it “TOS,” which is short for The Other Sh*t. Lessons that you can’t learn in standard business books, big company jobs or in a classroom. TOS comes from being an entrepreneur, taking risks and making mistakes.s

My goal is to share my learnings about TOS so I can help other entrepreneurs be successful. I’m primarily focused on leadership, growth and helping companies scale. And I hope that you will laugh at least once, even if just on the inside.

The entrepreneur’s journey is really, really hard work – but there is no other job like it in the world. So now I’m focused on investing in and working with exciting growth companies – especially helping amazing entrepreneurs grow and scale their businesses.

Silicon Couloir, Teton County Library and BELAY Present The 2018 Resource Forum

They say it takes a village . . .

Silicon Couloir was founded in 2012 to foster entrepreneurship in the Tetons by aligning entrepreneurs with our Jackson Community’s vision to support the creation of a diverse, non-tourism based economy that protects the health of our natural environment for current and future generations.

Silicon Couloir is part of a ecosystem of non-profit organizations, private organizations, governmental organizations, business leaders, and investors that work with entrepreneurs in our region.

We have gathered many of those organizations together for a unique Chance Meeting we are calling the Resource Forum . We want our community to know these entities, the services they provide, and how they work together to help grow and diversify our economy.

We also want to recognize our Platinum Sponsors BELAY for helping us organize this unique event. BELAY is changing the way businesses work with a virtual workforce to help connect entrepreneurs  with assistants, bookkeepers, content writers, webmasters and more. You can learn more about Belay at www.belaysolutions.com.

The Resource Forum will be held at Teton County Library (125 Virginia Lane, Jackson, WY), from 5 to 7 pm. In what promises to be a fun and likely format, each organization with have 1 minute to introduce their services, followed six  3 minute "speed dating" style rotations for attendees to connect with organizations individually.

Theme: Scaling and Managing a Company with Nationwide (International) Reach

Yellowberry, Dust Cutter, Stio and Melvin Brewing are local companies with national reach. But how did these highly successful companies scale and manage their growth while maintaining brand identity and culture?

Join us at The Rose from 5-7 pm for our May Chance Meetings as we sit with these CEOs and Founders to learn more about their journey building and operating a company with national recognition.

This panel will be part Q&A and part update. We want to hear from our community both and before and during the event. Please submit your questions to hello@siliconcouloir.com.

Panelists:

Megan Grassell-Yellowberry Founder/CEO  (https://www.yellowberrycompany.com)

Megan  started Yellowberry in March of 2013 as a junior in high school. She took her younger sister shopping for her first bras and was appalled at the overly-sexualized options available for her and other girls her age (tween, 8-14). After realizing there were not great options, Megan decided to find a way to make bras specifically for girls. She launched the company in January of 2014 and began to grow.

Since then, Yellowberry has flourished into something that is much more than a just bra company for girls. It is a brand that is changing the way girls buy bras, making that experience a positive one to remember.

Eric Green-Dustcutter and DC Racks Founder (http://dustcutter.com)

Eric Green is a Fourth Generation native of Jackson Hole. Eric is the Founder of the Dust Cutter Beverage Co., which has grown rapidly in 5 years. They now have product in 40 states in the US and have distribution in the UK, South Korea and Panama.

Eric is also the Founder of DC Racks which is launching its first product, Blaze Controller, in a few weeks. Blaze Controller is a wireless LED lighting controller for the automotive industry.

Stephen Sullivan-Stio® Founder/CEO (https://www.stio.com)

Stephen Sullivan is the Founder/CEO of Stio® a direct to consumer outdoor lifestyle brand based in Jackson, Wyoming. Sullivan was formerly the Founder/CEO of Mountain Origins LLC, a consulting group with a focus in the Outdoor, Snowsports and Fly Fishing industries, and was formerly the Co-Founder/President of Cloudveil®, an outdoor apparel manufacturer.

While at Cloudveil®, a brand that Sullivan founded and led from its inception in 1997 to over $45M in annual retail sales volume by 2008, Sullivan focused on the product, marketing, ecommerce and retail divisions. Sullivan has extensive hands-on experience working closely with over 600 national and international outdoor, snowsports and fly-fishing retailers and distributors including MEC, REI, Orvis, Cabela’s, EMS and SSV.

Sullivan, is a frequent panelist and lecturer in the outdoor/snowsports/fly fishing space and in his free time currently serves as a business mentor to several local and national companies. He is currently a Board Member of MountainHub and Center Management, Inc., and is a hockey coach for Jackson Youth Hockey. Sullivan is the former Vice Chairman of The American Fly Fishing Trade Association, and a previous board member of both Jackson Youth Soccer and 1% for the Tetons. Sullivan holds a BA in Humanities from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado and lives in Wilson, Wyoming with his wife and three children where he skis, rides, fly fishes and alpine climbs but mostly spends an inordinate amount of time hauling his kids around the western United States to compete in ski races, hockey, lacrosse and soccer tourneys!

Will Morrow-Financial Guru and Chief Adult Supervisor Melvin Brewing (https://melvinbrewing.com)

Will Morrow joined Melvin Brewing after the founder reached out to discuss expansion following winning some major brewing awards. He joined the team in 2014, completing a significant fund raise and establishing a public-private partnership with the state of Wyoming to take Melvin out of the Thai Me Up brewing closet to establish the brand on the national and international stage. He has been involved with every aspect of the company’s growth, from establishing production to signing distribution contracts and driving sales. At Melvin he leads Operations, Finance, and Administration.

Prior to Melvin, Mr. Morrow had a variety of experiences. Most recently, he was a “small cap” investor and growth management consultant, working with growing companies around the US. He was also a founding partner in a Wyoming oilfield services “roll-up”. Mr. Morrow began his professional career in investment banking at Salomon Smith Barney in New York.

April Chance Meetings

Theme: After the Launch . . .

We often hear about companies that are launching, and we hear about companies that have sold. But what happens in between? What happens after the launch? There are many successful entrepreneurs in the Teton region, and we wanted to hear what they have been up to. What has happened in the days, weeks, months and years after they designed their website and open their doors?

We’ve asked Aiden Doane of Rex Specs, Brian Modena of TIMBR Creative Agency, and Andi Keenan of Penny Lane Cooperative to share their business journeys with us. They will be on our panel of business owners for “After the Launch”.

About Our Panelists:

Aiden Doane, CEO of Rex Specs (www.rexspecs.com)

Aiden thrives on the fast pace startup phase and enjoys the creativity and analysis required to strategically grow an idea to a brand.

Brian Modena, TIMBR Creative Agency (https://wearetmbr.com/)

Brian Modena moved to Jackson in 2004 for one winter. 14 years later, he has founded the successful creatives agency TMBR.  He is a new father, an avid fisherman, and a Travel & Tourism Board member. In 2017, he became the co-owner of Buckrail, a “fast, free, online news aggregator.”

Theme: The Importance of Mentoring

“The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your own image, but giving them the opportunity to create themselves.”  -Steven Spielberg

Our TEAMS mentoring program is set to launch at the end of February with our first Mentor training (Learn more at https://www.siliconcouloir.com/teams). Mentoring is on our minds and the March 5th Chance Meetings is an ideal time to discuss the importance and value of mentoring.

We’ve all heard about the immense benefits of a good mentor-mentee partnership. Many potential mentors and mentees have questions about how to build a productive and trusting mentor-mentee relationship. What are the responsibilities of being an effective mentor or mentee? What are the challenges of mentoring or being mentored? What local avenues exist for forming a mentoring relationship?

Join us at The Rose on March 5th at Chance Meetings for in depth conversation exploring these questions and more with experienced local mentors/mentees who have navigated building and participating in successful mentoring relationships.

Panelists include:

·      Ginny Hutchinson, Silicon Couloir Board Member

·      Allison Bergh, Leadership at Play

·      Linn Heffner, Womentum

Theme: Beyond the B Corporations, Creating a Regenerative Economy

Is possible to create a successful business that sustains our social, environmental and economic well-being? As our Teton regional economy diversifies, how can entrepreneurs integrate these values into their businesses?  Join Jonathan Schechter and Fred Keller at our first Chance Meetings of 2018 for a thought-provoking discussion on being a part of the regenerative economy.

Fred Keller founded Cascade Engineering in 1973 with the belief business can be financially profitable and socially and environmentally responsible. Driven by Fred’s belief, a small team of six employees has grown to be a company of 1,600 people serving a worldwide customer base. See Fred discuss the concept of the Triple Bottom line- people, planet, profit- here. (http://www.cascadeng.com/what-we-believe). As one of the largest certified B Corps in the world, Cascade Engineering is widely recognized for business practices that emphasize how business can build financial, social, and environmental capital.

Jonathan Schechter, founder and Executive Director of the Charture Institute. The Charture Institute is a Jackson Hole, Wyoming-based think tank focused on growth, change, and sustainability in Places of Ecological and Aesthetic Significance (PEAS). Charture’s mission is to help these communities understand what’s happening to them, act to identify and sustain their essential qualities, and develop mechanisms for funding their sustainability efforts.
